Message from Director of Music

Welcome to the LVPA Music Department’s web page! Our department currently serves more than 160 students in grades 9-12. We are dedicated to providing our students with a vibrant musical experience, supporting their vocal health and musical literacy. Each year our students have the opportunity to perform solo and ensemble literature ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary composers, as well as experience master classes with nationally recognized singers and conductors.

Music Department Mission Statement: We believe that emphasizing the value of learning the craft of music in order to be a proficient practitioner is essential to the development of a competent artist.

“Throughlines” of the Music Department:  It is our goal that every music student will graduate with these learned skills….

  • Students will be able to read music at an advanced level.
  • Students will become analytical listeners.
  • Students will understand the historical setting of their musical repertoire.
  • Students will be creative and cooperative members of musical ensembles.

…And Understand these Essential Questions:

  • How does a musician practice efficiently?
  • How does one contribute effectively in an ensemble rehearsal?
  • How do we distinguish between a practitioner/technician and an artist?
  • How do you define a successful performance?
  • How do you differentiate an entertainer versus and artist/musician?
  • How well do you know your craft?
  • What is proficiency? What is musical competence?
  • How does your craft become musical art?

                (craft + art = competence)

 LVPA Vocal Department Mission Statement

The mission of the LVPA Vocal Department is to develop healthy technique through singing a variety of classical, jazz, and theater repertoire in solo and ensemble settings.

LVPA Jazz and Contemporary Music Mission Statement

The ultimate goal for the major in Jazz and Contemporary Music is to develop rather than trainmusicians for careers in professional music and prepare them to be competitive in higher education. Through a complete curriculum that includes courses in theory, history, business and recording as well as technique, ensemble and practical experience, the concept of a complete musician is accentuated allowing our students to grow intellectually as well as artistically.
