Title I - Child Find

TITLE I POLICY

Parental Involvement

The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts recognizes a child’s education is the responsibility shared by the school and family. We agree that the education of students is a cooperative effort among the school, parents/guardians and community.

In compliance with federal law, the school and parents/guardians of students participating in the Title I program shall jointly develop and agree upon a written parental involvement policy. The school supports parents/guardians as leaders and decision makers at all levels concerning the education of their child.

A written plan for Title I parent involvement that establishes programs and practices to enhance parental involvement will be jointly developed by parents and school staff. It will provide a sense of direction for designing initial and on-going activities.  This plan will also include a school-parent compact and support the development, implementation and regular evaluation of the parent involvement program.

The Role of Title I in The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts

The Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Performing Arts provides Title I support in the regular classroom and individual instruction through math and reading/writing workshops to identified students in grades 9-12.

Title I services are provided in workshop classes by math and reading/writing teachers working collaboratively with the regular classroom teachers. This approach provides students with individualized attention in areas of weakness. An additional service in the area of math is provided in the way of an extended Algebra I class that allows students to attend math class everyday instead of every other day so that their foundation in math can be strengthened.

Support services in the areas of math and reading/writing are also provided through peer tutoring provided by the National Honors Society.

In order to be eligible to receive Title I services, students can be identified in the following ways:

·      Classroom performance and observation

·      Standardized Testing

·      Competency Assessment

·      Referrals from classroom teachers

·      Referrals from parents/guardians

Child Find Procedure

  1. A new student arrives at LVPA and completes the Terra Nova standardized test in math and reading/writing.
  2. The Child Find team evaluates the scores of all student who took the test.  Any student identified as having scored Below Basic in math and/or reading/writing will be referred to the Child Find Program. Any student new or current student that has been recommended by a teacher and/or parent/guardian may also be referred to the Child Find Program.
  3. When a student is referred to the Child Find Program a letter is sent home notifying parents that their student is being monitored.
  4. Guidance counselors and classroom teachers are notified of students that are being monitored by the Child Find team so that they can also monitor their academic progress within the classroom.
  5. At mid-quarter progress report and end of the quarter report card, the Child Find team evaluates the student’s progress and makes a further recommendation.
    1. If the student is in good academic standing and has demonstrated sufficient progress no immediate intervention is taken and the student continues to be monitored for the remainder of the school year.
    2. If a student is doing poorly academically and is struggling to make sufficient progress the student will be enrolled in a workshop class for the second semester and will continue to be monitored.
  6. Students who are identified as needing further assistance and continue to make insufficient progress or have noted academic difficulties, even with the assistance of the Title I services, may be referred to the Educational Support Services Department for further evaluation.
    1. If a student is identified by the Educational Support Services Department as qualifying for special services then the child will be withdrawn from the Child Find Program and will then begin to be monitored by the Educational Support Services Department.
  7. All students having remained in the Child Find program will be re-tested in the spring using the Terra Nova standardized testing.
    1. If a student demonstrates sufficient progress on the test by scoring Basic, Proficient or Above Average they will be notified that they no longer require Title I remediation.
    2. If a students does not demonstrate sufficient progress on the test by scoring Below Basic the student will continue in the Child Find program the following school year.

* Please note that a student may be referred for Title I services at any time in their school career even if they have not previously qualified.
